Getting Around Auburn -- 4 Tips to Make It as Easy as Possible
Choose you apartment in Auburn with transportation in mind. At first glance, you might think that getting around Auburn is easy. After all, fewer than 60,000 people call it home! However, since 1990, only 18 other metro areas in the entire country have grown as quickly as Auburn has. With more and more people moving here every single day, you've got to know the best ways to get around town.
Here are the 4 best tips:
1. Get a bike
OK, so you won't be able to go EVERYWHERE on your bike, but the more places you pedal to, the easier your life will be! Auburn is incredibly bike-friendly, but don't take our word for it. The League of American Bicyclists actually gave Auburn an award for being one of the most bike-friendly small towns in the country. And, when you pedal to work or school, you're getting a great workout in addition to skipping a traffic jam!
2. Check out the Tiger Transit bus system
Whether you're a student at Auburn University, a professor, or some other type of employee, you'll be able to ride on the Tiger Transit bus system. Luckily, these buses don't just travel around campus. They also make stops at the local apartment complexes. That way, you don't have to worry about finding a parking spot -- or even buying a parking pass!
3. Put Lee-Russell Public Transit on your speed dial
If you're not affiliated with Auburn University, there is still public transportation to take advantage of. Specifically, the Lee-Russell Public Transit (LRPT) offers dial-a-ride to anyone who lives in Lee and Russell Counties. Unlike other curb-to-curb services, you don't need a doctor's note or any special qualifications to schedule a ride. Instead, it's all done on a first come first serve basis. If you'd rather leave the driving to someone else, call early and call often!
4. Keep an eye on your watch
If the Auburn Tigers have a home football game, you're going to see a massive increase in the local traffic! And, the closer it gets to kickoff, the harder it will be to navigate the streets. In fact, the Mell Street corridor (bound by the intersections of Thach and College, Mell and Samford, and Miller and College) closes to vehicular traffic as early as four hours before kickoff. Once the game is over, some of the streets around campus that are normally two-way become one-way so that fans can leave Jordan-Hare Stadium as quickly as possible.
If you're trying to get into town on I-85 on game day, steer clear of Exit 51 (Auburn's main exit). Instead, get off at Wire Road. You'll have to go through a rural area to get to the main part of town, but it's a lot better than dealing with all of that football fan congestion!
